Teaching

My teaching career has included working with diverse
student groups around the world. This includes working
with pre-primary, primary, and secondary school students
in Tanzania, Thailand, and Turkey; designing and
delivering in-person and digital professional development
courses and trainings for international development and
humanitarian practitioners; and delivering undergraduate
and graduate university courses and lectures for students
around the world. The goal of my teaching is to support
students to develop critical consciousness, as well as skills
that will support them in diverse career paths.

Courses Taught

  • Human Rights in Education (undergraduate level)

I most recently taught this course in the Fall 2023 semester at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This course explores key issues related to human rights and education, from the individual to the global level; and from the abstract to the practical. We will start by asking big questions that underlie current debates on human rights and education: How do we learn to be human? What rights characterize a human being? If human beings have a right to education, do they have a right to a particular type of education? Can the global framework of human rights improve current educational, national, social and economic inequalities? How is education as a human right related to human rights education? And finally, who should decide the answers to these questions and how? Through these questions we will explore the tensions and limits of the human rights framework to reduce social inequality.
